MESSAGE FROM THE NEW VICE PRESIDENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear friends,
If you were unable to attend the January association meeting you
missed an eventful evening. We welcomed several visitors, gained
at least two new members that I know of, thanked the outgoing (I
used to say OLD but was corrected) membership team and in
Ronnie's absence, I introduced your new leadership team.
There was a well-attended and interesting pre-meeting that
included as speakers Kate Michels, Carolyn Weitzer, Marci
Nemhauser and Kelly Cooper-Slayton. Carolyn led an Ontological
Coaching exercise, Kate shared information about the recent ICF
conference and then each of the afore-mentioned ladies gave an
overview of different aspects of the speech by Cheryl Richardson
at the conference. The pre-meeting is from 5:30 to 6:30 PM each
month.
At our regular meeting at 7 PM, I particularly enjoyed our guest
speaker Jan Shannon and her presentation on NLP (Neuro
Linguistic Programming) which gave us practical tools that we
can use in our practice immediately. I'm not a person that
generally enjoys role playing or break-out practice sessions on
the spot but I walked away feeling I learned something very
useful not only about myself but that will help me provide a
better level of service to my clients.
Mark your calendar for February 14th and plan to attend another
exciting meeting.
Yes, I know it's Valentine's Day, when the restaurants are over
booked, the service sub par and the rose prices out of sight so
my tip for the month; explain this to your Valentine and go to
dinner another evening.
Best regards for a successful 2006,
Dave
NWCA MEMBERSHIP CONNECTIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was researching the topics of community, membership and
association on the internet for this month's NWCA newsletter
when I came across an article that stated January 24th is the
"most depressing day of the year".   It seems that Dr. Cliff
Arnall, a British specialist in seasonal disorders, developed a
calculation that shows that misery peaks on January 24th. Dr.
Arnall demonstrates that by January 24th the majority of people
have broken their healthy resolutions (the highest percentage
six to seven days into the new year).

"Following the initial thrill of New Year's celebrations and
changing over a new leaf, reality starts to sink in," Arnall
said. "The realization coincides with the dark clouds rolling in
and the obligation to pay off Christmas credit card bills."

The formula, which was devised to help a travel company "analyze
when people book holidays and holiday trends," showed that
people are most likely to buy a ticket to paradise in their
darkest moment.  I found Alex Kennedy's comments most
interesting. Kennedy, a spokesperson for Porter Novelli, stated
that' "People feel bleak when they have nothing planned, but
once they book a holiday they have a goal, they work toward
having time off and a relaxing period."

Okay, so I'm playing around with his words with the bolding-but
you see where I'm going with this. It is apparent that this is
the opportune time for the coaching community to roll up our
sleeves and get to work! Sure it may be the most difficult time
of the year to be enthusiastic and productive, perhaps for
ourselves and our clients. But oh the joy when we reach that
goal!

At NWCA, the Leadership Team encourages and facilitates the
formation of a cohesive community among coaches in the Portland
Metro Area.   As members you are part of a group that shares
common interests and goals. Your membership dues support the
activities of the community, while your attendance and
participation in the monthly meetings benefit the members
individually and as a whole.

It may be wet, soggy, dark and dreary out there right now...but
spring is on the way!

Bob and I look forward to meeting and greeting each of you as
you check in at the meetings. Your attendance and participation
is an encouragement to us at all times, not only during these
winter blues. Your smiles and laughter serve as "sun breaks" in
the routine of our days. Your experiences and insights lighten
our load and give us pause and ah ha...

It wouldn't be a community, a membership or an association
without you. Thanks for being a part of NWCA.  We look forward
to seeing you at our February meeting. Come and bring a guest.

Most sincerely,
Bob Renggli and Christine Smith
