MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Bob Renggli Core Competency #10: Planning and Goal Setting

Why is it, that elements in life that are so simple (e.g. H2O) are so life-n-death essential? Core Competency #10 is just such a reality in the essential process of coaching! "Ability to develop and maintain an effective coaching plan with the client" is the source and summit of our profession as well as the engine that drives the entire "Self-help" explosion of products and programs on our bookshelves and T.V. shows. Just like the LA Weight Loss phenomenal success story, which is built around a disciplined diet and motivating trainer, so too "transformative-coaching", to snatch a phrase from the NW Academy of Coach Training, Invite Change, employs the tool of strict client goal setting to effect the desired life/business transformation.

Taken in isolation, planning is helpful, from the grocery list at home to the graduate MBA programs at work, where "management by objective and goal setting" is a central theme. What is obviously lacking here, from a coaching perspective, is the unique partnering with the client's stated agenda and desired outcomes by integrating a more holistic plan which includes the thinking, feeling, learning and creative forces of the client. This collaborative and co-designed plan of the client, with powerful questions that guide and stimulate the client, is precisely the "fuel" that fires up the coaching accomplishments.

It is precisely here at the 10th Core Competency that coaching niche's can be shifted from individual to group orientations. Leadership Development, Organizational Change, Group Transformation and corporate coaching opportunities today are all exploding with possibilities for those coaches who can imagine and engineer the intricacies of collective growth through new coaching paradigms that fit new situations. The British-American author D.H. Lawrence said that "the world fears a new experience more than anything. Because a new experience displaces so many old experiences." Man / Woman are creatures of habit and resist change. In our fast moving, disruptive culture, the coach's gift of "clarity with a plan" can make all the difference in the world for survival both individually and as a culture.

Are you interested in playing a more active role in the NWCA Chapter?

Do you have a couple hours a month you are willing to dedicate to strengthening our mission?

If so, we have an opportunity for you!

The goal is to form a sub-committee to support an annual fundraising effort that will generate money needed to send our President-Elect to the annual ICF conference. Ideally, we need one individual to take the lead and a small group of volunteers who will work together to plan and manage a fundraising event that both raises money and supports the coaching community!

Commitment to the Profession of Coaching

If you are even participating in the NWCA, clearly your professionalism as a coach matters to you. Yet, what is the level of your commitment to the profession of coaching? In fact, where are you with your commitment to developing your coaching skills? Ultimately, what kind of quality coach and impact do you want to be?

As we each develop our individual coaching skills, our profession takes on more credibility and legitimacy, as evidenced by the growth of organizations using coaching throughout the world. What is your next stretch as a coach to create the impact you dream of with your clients?

What would keeping a record of your coaching development do for the quality of your impact? What would you emphasize as the next step to your development? These are but a few questions to serve as guidelines for your own professional development.

Strategies for professional development include attending educational programs at NWCA, working with certified mentor coaches, networking, becoming a member of the ICF and even attending the ICF conference in Montreal. What is your next step?

NWCA 2009 ELECTED POSITIONS

2009 Northwest Coaches Association Nominations are now open for the following elected positions:

  • President-Elect
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

The current President-Elect, Feroshia Knight will automatically move to the 2009 President position in January 2009. Bob Renggli will assume the role of Immediate Past President for one year.

Summer Miller is the current Chapter Secretary.
Jennifer Powers is the current Chapter Treasurer.

Please send your nominations by email to Summer Miller: summer.d.miller@gmail.com, and type NWCA Nomination in the subject line of your email.

Please feel free to contact anyone of these office holders directly. Contact info is on-line under Chapter Membership profiles. Nominations will be open until October 21st. Once nominations are received, the Secretary will send out the final slate of candidates for a two week election period ending Tuesday November 4th. We will announce the new officers at the Holiday Party, December 9th.

Please seriously consider serving your Chapter in a leadership role, either in an elected or in an appointed Committee Chair position. You'll get back so much more than you ever give by growing from peer interaction and refining your coaching insights.

BUSINESS OF COACHING
Presenter: Sheryl Eldene, ACC
Topic: Four Business Models for Coaches
Description: This panel style presentation will focus on four business models that are available to coaches to create their businesses. We will look at the independent practitioner, the independent contract coach, the coaching franchise, and the network coaching model. For each model, we will review: 1) Marketing; 2) Training available; 3) System materials (intakes, assessments, etc.); 4) Admin and marketing systems; 5)Costs (start-up & on-going); and 6) Earning Potential. Attendees will walk away with a clearer understanding of each busines model, the strengths and weaknesses of each, as well as personal contacts with people who are active in each model.

Bio: Sheryl began her business in the mid '90's after a 20 year corporate career. In that field, she was an in-house consultant for Nike, Jantzen, and Oregon Mutual Insurance. She also consulted through the Small Business Administration with small owner-operator businesses, helping them create business processes and technology solutions to enhance their growth and success.
